Mike Starr, Alice in Chains bassist, dead at 44

Former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr died today.

Starr, 44, was found dead in a Salt Lake City home, TMZ reports. He, along with Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney and Layne Staley, were founding members of the Seattle grunge band that became Alice In Chains. His bass lines drove such '90s rock hits as "Would" and "Man in the Box." He left Alice in Chains during the band's 1992 tour and was replaced by Ozzy Osbourne's former bassist, Mike Inez.

Starr had appeared on VH1's "Celebrity Rehab" in 2009 and its spinoff, "Sober House." Just last month, police arrested him on felony drug charges. Dr. Drew Pinsky of "Celebrity Apprentice" wrote on Twitter today, "Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness. So very sad. Our prayers are with his family."

Alice in Chains has now lost two of its founding members. Staley died of a drug overdose in 2002, and Starr was the last person to see him alive.

New Soundgarden album recording begins next week

Soundgarden will start recording its first new album in 15 years next week.

Chris Cornell told Spin magazine that the new Soundgarden album recording will take place in the band's hometown of Seattle, and Adam Kasper will produce. It will be the first new Soundgarden album since 1996's Down on the Upside, which spawned the hits "Pretty Noose," "Burden in My Hand" and "Blow Up the Outside World." Kasper also produced that album.

It's shaping up to be a busy spring for the band. A new Soundgarden live album, Live on I-5, will hit stores March 22, and a Chris Cornell acoustic tour will wind through the country in April and early May.

Cornell also told Spin that Soundgarden will play some concerts this spring. And he said there is no timetable for completing the new Soundgarden album.

"The process of writing, recording, and being creative together is the most important thing, not meeting a deadline," he said.

Oasis-Radiohead feud flares up

Liam Gallagher has thrown some fuel on the Oasis-Radiohead fire.

The former Oasis front man criticized Radiohead for writing a song, "The King of Limbs," about a  1,000-year-old tree in England. Radiohead also named its new album The King of Limbs.

"I like to think that what we do, we do fucking well," Gallagher told Thequietus.com. "Them writing a song about a fucking tree? Give me a fucking break! A thousand year old tree? Go fuck yourself!"

The Oasis-Radiohead feud dates back several years, and usually it's one of the Gallagher brothers disparaging Radiohead. In 2002, for example, Noel Gallagher called the members of Radiohead "miserable bastards" whose "attitude leaves a lot to be desired." And in 2007, Liam Gallagher criticized Radiohead's sales model for its In Rainbows album, saying Oasis would do something similar "over my dead body."

New Foo Fighters song Rope debuts

A new Foo Fighters song, "Rope," has hit the airwaves.

"Rope" is the first single off the new Foo Fighters album, Wasting Light, which is due out April 12. The verses of the new Foo Fighters song have a slightly darker sound than the band's previous work and bear the influence of Grohl's work with Them Crooked Vultures and Queens of the Stone Age. But the choruses of "Rope" return to the band's traditional sound.

Other songs on the new Foo Fighters album include "Dear Rosemary," "White Limo," "Arlandria," "These Days," "Back and Forth," "A Matter of Time," "Miss the Misery," "I Should Have Known," "Walk" and "Verdict."
