Mike Starr, Alice in Chains bassist, dead at 44

Former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr died today.

Starr, 44, was found dead in a Salt Lake City home, TMZ reports. He, along with Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney and Layne Staley, were founding members of the Seattle grunge band that became Alice In Chains. His bass lines drove such '90s rock hits as "Would" and "Man in the Box." He left Alice in Chains during the band's 1992 tour and was replaced by Ozzy Osbourne's former bassist, Mike Inez.

Starr had appeared on VH1's "Celebrity Rehab" in 2009 and its spinoff, "Sober House." Just last month, police arrested him on felony drug charges. Dr. Drew Pinsky of "Celebrity Apprentice" wrote on Twitter today, "Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness. So very sad. Our prayers are with his family."

Alice in Chains has now lost two of its founding members. Staley died of a drug overdose in 2002, and Starr was the last person to see him alive.

New Soundgarden album recording begins next week

Soundgarden will start recording its first new album in 15 years next week.

Chris Cornell told Spin magazine that the new Soundgarden album recording will take place in the band's hometown of Seattle, and Adam Kasper will produce. It will be the first new Soundgarden album since 1996's Down on the Upside, which spawned the hits "Pretty Noose," "Burden in My Hand" and "Blow Up the Outside World." Kasper also produced that album.

It's shaping up to be a busy spring for the band. A new Soundgarden live album, Live on I-5, will hit stores March 22, and a Chris Cornell acoustic tour will wind through the country in April and early May.

Cornell also told Spin that Soundgarden will play some concerts this spring. And he said there is no timetable for completing the new Soundgarden album.

"The process of writing, recording, and being creative together is the most important thing, not meeting a deadline," he said.

Oasis-Radiohead feud flares up

Liam Gallagher has thrown some fuel on the Oasis-Radiohead fire.

The former Oasis front man criticized Radiohead for writing a song, "The King of Limbs," about a  1,000-year-old tree in England. Radiohead also named its new album The King of Limbs.

"I like to think that what we do, we do fucking well," Gallagher told Thequietus.com. "Them writing a song about a fucking tree? Give me a fucking break! A thousand year old tree? Go fuck yourself!"

The Oasis-Radiohead feud dates back several years, and usually it's one of the Gallagher brothers disparaging Radiohead. In 2002, for example, Noel Gallagher called the members of Radiohead "miserable bastards" whose "attitude leaves a lot to be desired." And in 2007, Liam Gallagher criticized Radiohead's sales model for its In Rainbows album, saying Oasis would do something similar "over my dead body."

New Foo Fighters song Rope debuts

A new Foo Fighters song, "Rope," has hit the airwaves.

"Rope" is the first single off the new Foo Fighters album, Wasting Light, which is due out April 12. The verses of the new Foo Fighters song have a slightly darker sound than the band's previous work and bear the influence of Grohl's work with Them Crooked Vultures and Queens of the Stone Age. But the choruses of "Rope" return to the band's traditional sound.

Other songs on the new Foo Fighters album include "Dear Rosemary," "White Limo," "Arlandria," "These Days," "Back and Forth," "A Matter of Time," "Miss the Misery," "I Should Have Known," "Walk" and "Verdict."

Pearl Jam Fenway Park concert possible

A Pearl Jam Fenway Park concert could be in the works.

Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein, an avowed Pearl Jam fan and friend of the band, was asked about the possibility of a Pearl Jam Fenway Park concert yesterday during a question-and-answer session with fans and the media.

"As soon as they start playing ballparks, we'll be first on the list," Epstein said, according to Boston.com.

But a Pearl Jam Fenway Park concert might not happen this year. The ballpark typically hosts just one headlining act each year, and New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys are already booked for two June concerts. (The one exception was in 2009, when Dave Matthews Band and Phish headlined separate shows in May, and Paul McCartney performed two concerts in August.)

Previous Fenway Park concerts have featured Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in 2003, Jimmy Buffett in 2004, The Rolling Stones in 2005, DMB in 2006, The Police in 2007, Neil Diamond in 2008 and Aerosmith with J. Geils Band in 2010.

If more concrete information about a Pearl Jam Fenway Park concert becomes available, we'll bring it to you.

Pearl Jam box set: Vs., Vitalogy and more

A Pearl Jam box set due later this year will feature reissues of Vs. and Vitalogy, as well as unreleased recordings.

Bassist Jeff Ament and manager Kelly Curtis disclosed details of the Pearl Jam box set to Rolling Stone earlier this month. The reissues of Vs. and Vitalogy will feature new tracks, such as alternate versions of "Corduroy" and "Better Man." But the real gem of the Pearl Jam box set will be a recording of a 1994 concert in Boston. (The three possibilities are the April 10 and 11 shows from the old Boston Garden, or the rarities-filled April 12 concert from the Orpheum Theater.)

The Pearl Jam box set is part of the band's 20th anniversary celebration, which will also include a festival this summer and the release of a Cameron Crowe documentary about the band. There is no release date yet for the Pearl Jam box set.

Here's a video of Pearl Jam playing "State and Love and Trust" at the Boston Garden on April 11, 1994 -- a performance that could be included in the Pearl Jam box set:

Pearl Jam-Dave Matthews Band festival rumored

A Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews Band festival may be in the works for later this year.

There will be four Dave Matthews Band festivals this year, and Pearl Jam is also planning its own festival. (Both bands are celebrating their 20th anniversaries.)

Rumors had said Phish would be joining the DMB festivals, but Dave Matthews Band news site DMBnews.net reports that DMB bassist Stefan Lessard tweeted today: "DMB & Pearl Jam or DMB & Phish?" That sparked rumors of a joint Dave Matthews Band and Pearl Jam festival this year.

Lessard and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready recently started a side project called 1, 2, 3 Go! with members of Fuel, so a Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews Band festival wouldn't be totally out of left field. But neither band has confirmed the dates, locations or supporting acts for their festivals at this time. Pearl Jam has said its festival will take place this summer, somewhere in the middle of the country.

Chris Cornell acoustic tour scheduled

A Chris Cornell acoustic tour will take place this April and early May.

The Chris Cornell acoustic tour, announced today, begins April 1 in Austin, Texas and ends May 6 in San Diego. After the Austin date, the Chris Cornell acoustic tour will travel through the Southeast, then up and down the East Coast. The Midwest and western Canada follow, ending with a trek down the West Coast. Get all the Chris Cornell acoustic tour dates on his official site.

The tour will feature songs from Cornell's entire career -- including Soundgarden, Audioslave and his solo albums -- as well as "a few surprise covers," the tour announcement said. But the Chris Cornell acoustic tour is not good news for fans who were hoping for a full Soundgarden tour anytime soon. Soundgarden reunited last year but has only played a handful of shows since then.
